I do what I can to enjoy the particular aspects of living in rural Japan that are enjoyable to me, to be sure, and to say that where I live it wholly without merit would be incorrect. However, it does seem that even the positive aspects of this place are balanced out by equally negative aspects along the same lines--the people are friendly, but few speak English and many are freaked out by foreigners since foreigners are still so rare; the view is often spectacular, but this spectacular view is taken in by me over the course of my hour-long commute by car each way to my good school three days a week. So yeah, while I am here I do (and will continue to) spend a lot of time listening to Radiohead records on my headphones and walking around appreciating the beauty of snowfall seen at night through the light of a street lamp... but when my tenure is up, I will be so totally ready to leave for someplace else. If that makes sense.

At some point in your life, do you think you will appreciate serenity? If so, then why not channel that part of you and do your best to enjoy the moment? If not, then I guess you really are in hell.

On an unrelated note, the author of that book, Phil Plait, has a twitter account (@BadAstronomer) that he's pretty active on. Also, his blog (badastronomy.com) is awesome.
