Maybe I'm just totally off base then. I will say, though, that while I was living up north in Iwate I never heard anyone say "domo arigatou." There could be many reasons for this: regional speech patterns, me being unobservant, or it might even have been the way that I was spoken to as a foreigner was different or more formal from how people would speak to their friends. But I admit that I am not any kind of expert on the Japanese language.

I beg to differ. I have heard Japanese people use the phrase "domo arigatou" all by its lonesome. In fact on one occasion the man jokingly added the "Mr. Roboto" (that was on a televised awards show.) So Japanese people are aware of the song and do say "domo arigatou."

I guess I'll leave it to someone else whether or not they merely use it for the benefit of stupid, clueless Americans, though.

Interesting. My girlfriend always says ''doumo arigatou'', ''doumo ni arigatou'' and ''arigatou gozaimasu'' interchangably with me. I guess it depends on the person.

Trippy. It might be a regional thing I guess--where I lived I certainly never heard anyone use the term "doumo arigatou," but I was up North in the mountains. And I'm certainly no expert on the Japanese language, but I do remember my students laughing and mimicking me when I used the phrase "doumo arigatou" the first week of school.
